Next up ‘On the Road’ for the Heed is a 266-mile round trip to The Attis Arena, where we face Scunthorpe United in the Enterprise National League on Tuesday evening.

The Iron are going well in their first season back in the National League, and occupy 6th position in the Enterprise National League, with a commendable 46 points from 23 games. Scunthorpe have won their last five games in all competitions, most recently defeating Hartlepool United 2-1 at Victoria Park, with both goals scored by ex-Heed loanee, Callum Roberts.

Roberts is one of four former Heed men in The Iron’s ranks, alongside Jean Belehouan, Branden Horton and Tyrell Sellars-Fleming.

We’ve Met Before

The most recent meeting between these two sides was back in April 2023, with a resurgent Heed side triumphing 2-0 at the International Stadium. First half goals from Greg Olley and Stephen Wearne put the Heed in cruise control, before Tom Pugh saw red for The Iron with just 38 minutes on the clock.

Match Report: Gateshead FC

Gateshead ended 2025 with a 2-0 defeat away to Scunthorpe United, seeing the Heed sink bottom of the National League table.

Alun Armstrong’s side, who played an hour with 10 men, were defeated through a penalty and late free-kick.

Fenton John, Jacob Butterfield and Kyle Hurst were the three changes from Boxing Day’s home defeat to Carlisle United.

Scunthorpe created the first chance when Declan Howe tested Tiernan Brooks in the second minute from a corner.

By the 10th minute, Gateshead’s fortunes had taken a hit when captain Kenton Richardson went down injured – he was replaced with Max Melbourne.

Melbourne lasted just 22 minutes, however, as he was red carded for handball inside of the Gateshead box.

The resulting penalty was smashed home by Callum Roberts to give Scunthorpe the lead.

A defensive change was made as Gateshead shuffled the pack, seeing Will Flint come on for Josh Home, before the referee called for half-time.

Scunthorpe peppered Brooks in the second half with chances from Roberts, Branden Horton and Danny Whitehall.

A triple change was the reply from Gateshead with Curtis Edwards, Tyrelle Newton and Frank Nouble all looking to make an impact.

However, in the third minute of additional time, Scunthorpe doubled their lead when Roberts won a foul and Whitehall dispatched of the free-kick.

With the referee blowing at 2-0, Gateshead count an 11th consecutive defeat in all competitions.
